This section of the GANZ website is for people looking for information about natural gas in homes, offices, restaurants, schools, hospitals and the hospitality industry. It provides information about gas efficiency, lifestyle use, environmental benefits, the types of appliances available, where to find appliance retailers and how to get your appliances installed.
It also shows how to get connected to gas, who to call if there is a problem and shows just how efficient and environmentally friendly gas can be.
Clean, efficient, environmentally friendly fuel
Natural gas is instant, clean and environmentally friendly. It is a precise, efficient energy source. It is highly flammable, burns almost completely and is considered a clean fuel, as it doesn’t produce any ash, dust or smoke. When natural gas burns efficiently in the air it only produces energy, water and carbon dioxide.
Plenty of gas
There is no threat to supplies of gas for the domestic and commercial market in the foreseeable future. Wells, such as Kapuni, provide gas to the reticulated network that feeds homes, offices, restaurants and commercial premises. The Maui run-down will have no effect on supplies of gas to this market, and consumers can be confident that gas will be available for many, many years into the future.
Versatile energy
Natural gas is used in homes, restaurants, commercial premises, such as the hospitality industry and in schools and hospitals for space heating, cooking and hot water. It is economic and instant, and can heat large areas. It is also used in New Zealand’s major export processing industries for heating and generating steam and energy.
Instant and powerful energy
Natural gas is an instant and “economic”cost-effectiveness fuel for heating water and large areas, as well as for cooking. It can deliver a power output far greater than electricity’s standard 2.2 kilowatts. And, it provides precise control and immediate results.
Immediate heating and comfort
It takes only a little gas to produce a lot of energy, instantly, for immediate heating and comfort. That makes gas extremely economical to use for heating. In addition to modern and effective home heating, there is a range of commercial heating options available including gas-fired boilers, unit heaters designed for large open areas, co-generation systems, and afterburners which use burnt waste to produce heat.
Precision in the kitchen
Natural gas is the fuel of choice in the professional kitchen, preferred by chefs and food professionals for its reliability, precision and control. Only a gas flame allows for precise temperature control and infinite heat settings, going from cold to hot and back again in an instant. And gas ovens provide greater energy efficiency as there is no need for pre-heating with gas.
Energy efficiency
Gas produces fewer emissions and is highly energy efficient, when maintained, 80 – 90 percent. Gas is also an economical choice, as gas appliances are usually cheaper to operate than electrical units.
Safety
As the natural gas in our pipelines has no detectible smell a tiny amount of a strong smelling chemical, called an odorant, is added to the gas. This is a safety measure so that gas can be easily detected if there is a leak.
