Cost effectiveness
Gas appliances are generally considered to be cheaper to run than their electrical counterparts.
One of the main reasons for this is that gas provides instant heat. With no warm-up phase gas is more efficient and cost effective than conventional heating methods.
“In Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton, you’ll save money if you use gas for as many services as you can.
“Using gas for water heating and home heating costs less than using electricity alone, even though you have to pay two fixed charges.
“The more energy your household uses, the more you’ll potentially save by using gas.” (Opening paragraph in a major story in Consumer Magazine, October 2004.)
Gas appliances can save the consumer money as they provide improved combustion efficiency thus lower operating costs, lower maintenance costs, significantly longer equipment life and resource management advantages such as lower costs and easier consent applications.
As well as being a cost-effective option for the home, natural gas is an attractive commercial proposition. For the commercial sector heating options include gas-fired boilers, unit heaters designed for large open areas, co-generation systems, and afterburners which use burnt waste to produce heat – thus making gas an impressive and economical choice.
Currently New Zealand consumers have access to a wide range of highly efficient gas appliances from all over the world which, depending on local electricity costs, can save up to 40% on day time electricity charges where energy efficient appliance are used.
It is the efficiency of these appliances, particularly instant hot water heating and space heating systems, which provide the consumer with savings.
