Data and Statistics

For comprehensive statistics and supporting information on New Zealand’s gas supply, demand and prices please refer to the Ministry of Economic Development’s Energy Data File.

This includes annual data since 1974, with monthly or quarterly data and energy balances for the more recent years. Oil and gas reserves information are also included. The Energy Data File is published twice-yearly.

All editions of the Energy Data File from 1997 can be accessed online free of charge in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF).

Energy in Brief graphically presents the concise summaries of key energy data for New Zealand. It also highlights international energy comparisons with New Zealand’s major trading partners and selected countries.

The Department of Statistics produce Energy statistics including details about the volume and use of electricity generated each year and the production volumes of gas, coal, domestic crude petroleum and refined petroleum and diesel are also available.

In the March 2007 quarter:
Total electricity generation increased 1.2 percent compared with March 2006.
Generation from hydro and wind rose 17.0 percent, while thermal generation fell 19.4 percent compared with March 2006.
Renewable resources generated 74 percent of total electricity, up 10 percent on March 2006.

In the March 2007 year:
Total electricity generation increased 1.6 percent compared with March 2006.
Generation from hydro and wind rose 9.9 percent, while thermal generation fell 9.1 percent compared with March 2006.
