Gas Fields & Production

Currently, gas is produced entirely in the Taranaki region. The Maui field dominates natural gas production. Maui, together with the smaller Kapuni field, produced 80% of total production in the year to March 2005. Shell Todd Oil Services Ltd operates both these fields.

The development of Pohokura and Kupe, recent gas finds, such as Turangi-1, and revelations regarding significant new reserves in Maui, mean that consumers on the reticulated network can be assured of plentiful supplies of natural gas for the foreseeable future.

Annual gas production currently averages around 200 PJ per year. Other producing fields during the year were:

  • McKee and Mangahewa (from September 2001) owned by Todd Taranaki Ltd;

  • The Waihapa/Ngaere and Tariki/Ahuroa fields, owned by Southern Petroleum New Zealand Exploration Ltd and Swift Energy New Zealand Ltd;

  • Rimu (including Kauri well) owned by Swift Energy New Zealand Ltd;

  • Ngatoro (including the Goldie well, which recommenced production in December 2003), owned by Greymouth Petroleum Acquisition Company Ltd, Southern Petroleum (Ohange) Ltd, and Greymouth Petroleum Ltd;

  • Kamiro, owned by Greymouth Petroleum Acquisition Company Limited.
Together these fields provide the remaining 20% of total gas production.

Production
Total New Zealand gas production in the year ended September 2005, excluding gas reinjected or flared and LPG extracted, was 150.4 PJ.

LPG
The Gas Industry produced 9.5PJ of liquefied petroleum gas; of which 0.9PJ was exported and 8.1 PJ was used in New Zealand in the year ended September 2005.

CNG
Compressed natural gas is supplied to the automotive market through North Island service stations. The CNG market has decreased markedly since the removal of government subsidies in 1987 and the reductions in petrol and diesel prices in the mid 1990s.
