Gas Safety

Gas Appliance Safety Regime
All gas appliances and fittings must be capable of operating safely when installed correctly and used for their intended purpose.

Energy Safety require suppliers of gas appliances to make a formal declaration that their appliances met the relevant safety requirements. Once approved, the appliance is listed on the ESS website, and potential purchasers can search the ES website and ensure their choice is approved.

Suppliers register on the ES website, and downstream suppliers (e.g. retailers and installers) have an obligation to ensure that the appliances are listed on the website before supplying or installing the appliance.

The regime is designed to:

  • Document suppliers’ commitments to compliance with the safety regime.

  • Force a rigorous assessment by suppliers of their compliance obligations.

  • Provide transparency for other suppliers, the trade and consumers.

  • Keep compliance costs for appliances and fitting suppliers to a minimum.

Gas equipment suppliers (manufacturers, importers and wholesalers) must complete a Supplier Declaration that is fully supported by documentation able to demonstrate compliance for all gas appliances. This information is published on the ES website prior to the appliances or fittings are able to be supplied.

Consumers can use the website to confirm that any appliance or specified fitting they plan to purchase meets safety requirements.

Retailers and gasfitters are required to confirm that appliances are listed on the website before supplying or installing the appliance.
