Why Use Gas?

Secure Supplies
There is plenty of gas for the reticulated market (both domestic and commercial) for the foreseeable future. Gas will not run out for these markets as wells, other than Maui, such as Kapuni, have sufficient reserves to at least 2020 for homes, offices, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools and commercial premises.

The depletion of the Maui field has fuelled ongoing misconceptions about the availability of future supplies of gas for domestic and commercial use. The Maui issue is about sources of energy for electricity generation.

The Maui run-down will have no effect on supplies of gas for domestic and commercial use, and consumers can be confident that gas will be available for many, many years into the future.
There are a number of other producing wells, such as Kapuni, and new supplies from new wells, such as Pohokura, Kupe and the recently discovered Turangi-1 well are expected to provide sufficient gas.

Government and the exploration industry alike are actively promoting an enhanced exploration and production programme to find new oil and gas fields. The Minister of Energy recently said “There’s no doubt that New Zealand has plenty of gas – we just have to drill enough holes to find it, in economic quantities and locations, and attract the capital necessary to develop the fields.”
